Small Bathroom Organization Ideas for Apartments

Great apartments often come with small bathrooms. Tidy spaces and compact floor plans are efficient, but it doesn't leave a lot of room for your toiletries. Getting ready in the morning, from showering to setting your hair, requires essential supplies. Shampoo and conditioner, soap and washrags, cleanser and moisturizer, cosmetics and hair styling products: we need a lot of stuff in the bathroom. When space is limited, it's time to get creative.
Small bathroom organization ideas are the solution, from basket shelves in the shower to low-profile shelves in tight spaces. For an apartment bathroom, the key is non-permanent methods that provide the storage and aesthetics you need.

Apartment-Friendly Storage Solutions

Many of the storage hacks for a small space involve things like floating shelves, adhesive strips, and hanging baskets. However, these require permanent installation with things like drywall anchors and non-removable glue. Apartment-friendly storage solutions mean relying on methods that don't require altering the bathroom itself.
Fortunately, we've got you covered with creative ideas you can implement or remove anytime.

Bathtub and Shower Organizers

Bathtub organization ideas give you space for your bathing supplies like shampoo, conditioner, facial cleanser, soap, washcloths, and so on. They can be designed by the type of bathtub you have. Most can accommodate the typical bathtub-shower design, and some are uniquely suited for a shower stall or bathtub alone.

Hang Baskets on the Showerhead

  • The easiest shower storage is to hang a wire basket or basket shelves from your shower head.
  • Only do this if your shower head is securely attached, and do not place heavier items in the basket.

Vertical Tension Rod Shelves In the Shower

  • A vertical tension rod can hold tiered basket shelves. It is ideal for a bathtub or tub/shower located in a tiled corner. The tension rod connects between the top corner of the tub and the ceiling to hold the extra basket shelves upright.

Horizontal Tension Rod to Hang Items

  • A horizontal tension rod works just like a shower curtain rod; you only place it along the back wall of a tub shower or shower stall. Then, you can hang items like your washcloth or loofa and use hooks to hang smaller toiletries.

Bathtub Tray

  • If you have a standalone bathtub (or a tub with a ridge on both sides), you can use a bathtub tray. This tray is the perfect place to hold toiletries and small personal items while you soak.

Shower Stall Standing Shelf

  • For a shower stall with a flat tiled floor, you can place a low-profile, waterproof standing shelf to hold your toiletries.

Vanity, Sink, and Medicine Cabinet

There are so many types of vanity, sink, and mirror setups in small bathrooms. Some have a pedestal or floating sinks; some have a cabinet and countertop. You might have a small framed mirror or a large pane mirror. The right bathroom storage organization means adapting your bathroom to suit your needs.

Vanity Shelves or Drawers

  • If you have a vanity countertop, place small shelves or a set of drawers to keep all your toiletries neatly organized.

Canisters and Jars

  • Decorative canisters and jars can give you tidy vertical storage for things like toothbrushes, q-tips and cotton balls, makeup brushes, and other essentials.

Suction-Cup Shelves on a Large Mirror

  • If you have a large, flat mirror, you can place lightweight storage baskets using suction cups. This method doesn't work well in the shower due to soap residue, but good suction cups can provide non-permanent vanity shelving that stays put. However, be mindful not to put anything breakable in storage that is attached with a suction cup in case it were to fall.

Circle Shelf Around a Pedestal Sink

  • If you have a pedestal sink, it lacks under-sink storage. Correct that with a half-circle shelf that wraps around the pedestal pillar.

Shelves and Racks in the Sink Cabinet

  • If you have an under-sink cabinet, add internal storage features like place-in shelves, racks, or small drawer sets to enhance the storage potential and organization of the space.

Trays in the Medicine Cabinet

  • If you have a medicine cabinet, use small shallow trays to keep those little shelves organized and prevent things from falling out.

Shelves in Tight Spaces

You can even add stand-up shelving if you need more spacious small bathroom organization ideas. Ladder shelves, above-the-toilet shelves, and corner shelves can make the most of a small space.

Ladder-Style Shelf

  • Ladder shelves lean against the wall, and each shelf is slightly shallower than the one above. They are ideal for that half-sized space between the sink and tub or leaning between the toilet and wall if there's room.

Above-the-Toilet Shelf Stand

  • An above-the-toilet shelf has long legs to provide vertical shelving above the toilet tank. It's a great way to get vertical shelving in a limited-footprint space.

Corner Shelves and Half-Circle Shelves

  • Corner shelves are triangle or quarter-circle shaped with a right angle that nestles into the corner. They are great for small item storage and fit into very tight spaces, like behind the swing of a door, next to the tub across from the sink, or in the corner back behind the toilet.
